LATTER

Chicago, IL

Formed by chance in 2022 in Chicago, Latter is the noise rock project of Philadelphia-born sound artist Meredith Haines and drummer Jonathan Alvarado (Beach Bunny). After a decade in the Philadelphia DIY scene, Haines had walked away from music entirely—burned out and disillusioned, she had given up for good. At 32, she was building a new life as a sound artist and college advisor.

In July of that year, Haines and Alvarado met through mutual friends and began weekly jam sessions. What started as casual meetups quickly unearthed something deeper—a sound that felt urgent, raw, and necessary. Against all odds, Latter became Haines’ return to music.

The band’s debut album, My Body Is My Sickness, written during the final stages of a destructive relationship, documents a mind unraveling. Themes of chronic illness, post-COVID dissociation, and heartbreak course through the songs. Self-funded and recorded with Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording, the 7-track album fuses noise, post-hardcore, screamo, and indie pop into a form that resists containment.

In early 2025, a live video of their single “I Don’t Owe You” went viral, garnering national attention. The clip struck a nerve, earning the band hundreds of thousands of streams and playlist placements from Audiotree, The Flenser, and more.

Latter’s live performances are confrontational and ecstatic. Haines performs in a hospital gown, jumps into the audience, and ends each set cutting herself out of the gown with an amplified saw. She also uses DIY sound devices—like a three-channel oscillator controlled by photoresistors—blurring the line between music, sound art, and performance art.

Joined live by Clementine Baker and Nic Cheatle, Latter has played sold-out shows at Empty Bottle and Bottom Lounge, opened for national acts like WHORES. and Heart to Gold, and is slated to perform at PUG Fest and Ghost Canyon Fest in summer 2025. New music is set for release by August.
