NGUYEN, PRYMEK, SHIRIOSHI

A trio that is very much greater than the sum of its parts, drummer Thom Nguyen (NC), guitarist Chaz Prymek (UT) and saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi (CA) brings out an unique and specific unique energy from each other creating something more ritual than concert. On their LP “Eventually The River Rises Here Too, As It Always Has”(ramble records) we hear them moving together in something of a mind-meld ecstatic dirge. Obviously deep and thoughtful listeners, crafting and navigating their sonic ship together as a single unit. The idea of it being three distinct artists dissipates as they become something else entirely.

We might know Patrick Shiroishi as perhaps our generation’s greatest living saxophone player, doing everything from premiering works for the LA Symphony at Disney Hall, and playing in iconic punk band The Armed, or as 1/4 of the ambient jazz quartet Fuubutsushi alongside guitarist Chaz Prymek aka Lake Mary. Here they are joined by Asheville based drummer and multi-instrumentalist Thom Nguyen, whose solo works, either so drum set or ambient, are thrilling and deeply moving. You might have heard Thom’s work in his project Manas or on myriad records coming out of North Carolina.

This Ghost Canyon Festival appearance marks a return after four years since the trio has been together.
